What happens in a Papergirl project?

A call for art submissions goes out to Calgary’s art community, across Canada, and the world!
The artwork is exhibited* (Papergirl is proudly partnered with EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts)
At the end of the exhibit all submitted works are rolled up and delivered at random by Papergirls ‘n boys to the unsuspecting local Calgary community. It’s a massive ‘giftervention’!

The Results of Papergirl? Artists of all styles, genres and experience, exhibit their work together AND share it with a new ‘collector’. Papergirls ‘n boys get some great exercise and plenty of smiles whilst gifting art. Volunteers get to know their community a bit better, AND hundreds of Calgarians make and receive fabulous works of art!

BIKE BLING-A-LING WORKSHOP!

Ever had a zany idea for your bike? Enjoy blinging things? Join us for BIKE BLING-A-LING!

WHEN: Saturday August 17, 3-5pm

WHERE: EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, in the Arts Learning Centre (Ground Floor)

WHAT ARE WE DOING?: Bike Tassels, Banners, flags, designer horns, bejeweling, feathers, sprockets and spokes, we are going to create every possible imaginable accessory for every style of bike. Always wanted to create a basket? Or to add some colour to your frame? Get on over to the Arts Learning Center this August for this workshop, you will be blown away at what we can do with some beads, tape, glue, and pipe cleaners! Join us in creating a whole line of accessories for our Papergirls and Boys to head out on the town with during ‘the main event’ the official 2013 Papergirl Giftervention (August 18).

We hope to produce a whole load of prints that will help all of our Papergirls and Boys to be identified on the ride out happening later on in the week (August 18th). POETY FLOATS: a workshop with Kris Demeanor

DATE: Wednesday, August 14, 2013 TIME: 9:30 am – 3:30 pm

PLACE: EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts in the Arts Learning Centre (main floor of Centre Court). Afternoon on Olympic Plaza.

COST: FREE but registration is required. Interested participants please email tmcgrath@epcorcentre.org by August 9, 2013. Include your first and last name, telephone number and email address. To ensure that as many people as possible can participate, registrants are asked to provide 48 hours’ notice to cancel their participation so that if anyone is on the waiting list they can be added to the class. Enrollment is limited.

(PAPER-BOAT BY GERMAN CONCEPTUAL ARTIST FRANK BOLTER)

WORKSHOP INFORMATION: Poetry is like an octopus, or Medusa, or an umbrella! It is creative language that speaks to the universal, the personal, and the imaginative, and it can come in many forms. In this workshop, explore poetry in classic poem form, rhythmic spoken word (Slam!), song lyric and storytelling. Discover the differences in the ways these form are crafted and performed, and which style best suits you in expressing your joy, your rage, your fascination.

The goal will be to write a piece as a group and perform it, and if there’s time, give each participant a chance to write a personal poem or song. We’ll start off by Kris Demeanor giving examples of his own work, talking about how he approaches writing, and sharing tricks of the trade for novices and intermediate writers alike. We will get as weird, wild, earnest, descriptive, and hilarious as we can in our time together.

Participants will be invited to write their poems on waterproof paper and create paper boats. The boats will be released onto the water in Olympic plaza and the public is invited to take the boats with them.

RECEPTION: All participants of the Poetry Floats workshop are invited to attend the Papergirl reception on August 14 from 6pm – 8pm on the same day. Kris Demeanor Bio

Calgary songwriter Kris Demeanor delights in exposing the underbelly of western Canadian culture- gambling, drug use, murder, religion, the suburbs. His work explore the darkness and absurdity of these corners of Alberta life, offering songs, poems, and stories for audiences who like to think, laugh, weep, dance and party.

Kris has been increasingly active in the theatre, spoken word, and literary scenes in Calgary and around the country. Career highlights include taking the award winning short film based on his song ‘I Have Seen the Future’ to the Sundance and Toronto film festivals, collaborating with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra on the 2011 event ‘Acres of Dreams’, and sharing a beer with David Byrne.

Kris is the first Poet Laureate of the City of Calgary.

We are very pleased to announce our Limited Edition Posters for 2013! It was a tough selection process for our Jury! The three posters selected for 2013 were great bike inspired works of art by Alyssa McMurry, Daniel J. Kirk, and Nicole Edmond. The fourth poster in the edition was a special selection of a print that was first created from Papergirl Calgary 2012. It is a design by Kristofer Kelly.

LIMITED POSTER EDITION JURY 2013

Meet the Jury! A special thanks to the folks below who juried the 2013 Papergirl Ltd. Edition Poster Jury. Kudos to you all!

James Jensen attained a BFA in Printmaking from the Alberta College of Art & Design in 1996. Since then he has continued to create original art. He also started his own successful graphic design company, Atom Graphics. James’ most memorable gifting experience: My Mom giving me back my old Star Wars figures after finding them in her basement.

Tammy McGrath is a multimedia artist, art instructor, visual and media arts programmer at the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts and curator of the Soundasaurus Multimedia Sound Arts Festival in Calgary Alberta (all around-art advocate). Tammy’s most memorable gifting experience: When I was a kid around seven years old there was a little boy named Matthew who lived in the flat below us. His family owned some chickens and other animals that roamed around the property. My most vivid childhood memory is of this little boy (who was my best friend) knocking at my door and proudly giving me one of his eggs for my breakfast.

Tryphena Fric is currently employed full time at Theatre Calgary in Sales and Student Education. She has a BFA in Visual Arts from York University, a diploma from Art Instruction Schools and is currently studying Non-profit Management at Mount Royal University. Last year, she was a participating artist for Papergirl Calgary 2012 and this year she is a Project Organizer for Papergirl Calgary 2013. Tryphena’s most memorable gifting experience: The act of gifting to someone else. I much rather prefer attention be on someone else that I care about and love it when I can make someone smile by giving them something big, or small, as a token of how I care. My favourite gift that I have received is not materialistic, but rather experiential - all the memories of great times with people I have met and said goodbye to now, and people who are in my life currently.

Renato Vitic is a Calgary based artist and arts administrator. Renato has exhibited his installation, and painted works both in Calgary, Edmonton, and Halifax. As a member of the walking collective, “The Ministry of Walking,” Renato has presented interactive walking performances in Calgary, Banff, Edmonton, and Halifax. Renato has also toiled in the arts community in Calgary in various roles such as the Festival Coordinator for the Mountain Standard Time Performantive Art Festival (M:ST), the Manager of Resource Development for the Art Gallery of Calgary, a member of the Board of Directors of the Mountain Standard Time Performative Art Festival Society (M:ST), and currently as the Executive Director of TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary. Renato’s most memorable gifting experience: coming soon…

Michele Mateus is a Papergirl fanatic! She started Papergirl Vancouver back in 2011 with a group of volunteers in Vancouver. What she loves about Papergirl is how it challenges us to share, connect with the general public and of course loves all the amazing art that ours through her office in the spirit of giving. She has worked as a Volunteer Manager for the past 13 years and believes in the value that volunteerism brings to the community and to oneself. “Papergirl allows volunteers, artists and community members to be part of a creative worldwide movement, and I am so lucky to be one small part of the Art of Giving Art!” Michele’s most memorable gifting experience: Most memorable gift experience would have to be when Alix, who I started Papergirl with, brought me a special care package to the hospital a few years back. I have Multiple Sclerosis and I was suffering my first big attack and biggest scare of my life; not to mento0ion it was days before my birthday. I had a sense of paralysis from the breast down and was in extreme pain. Alix brought me a care package, consisting of a fairy wand and hot pink nail varnish! Though I was not in the mood to doll myself up, this little treat really brought a flash of colour into that dull hospital room, and to my toes that I could not move or feel. I keep a picture of those freshly polished toes to this day! Alix and I had only known each other a few months working on Papergirl together and her gift of friendship in such a short time as well as the fun treats are something I will always hold near to my heart.

This year for Papergirl Calgary we will be commissioning 3 artists to create 3 Limited edition poster sets for Papergirl Calgary 2013. Each artists’ poster will become a Limited Edition of 75, and we will be gifting them all away! Yes, you heard correctly, gifting them all away!

In addition to this trio of posters, we have also created a 75 print poster run of a screen that we used during last year’s Papergirl. This print was designed by Kristofer Kelly (http://www.kristoferkelly.com/), and Printed by Sunshine Frere (http://sunshinefrere.wordpress.com/) & Belinda Siu.

75 REASONS TO SUPPORT PAPERGIRL!

As you know we have put out a call for artists to send us poster designs to create a 2013 Limited Edition Series of Posters. Be it a digital print, a silkscreen edition, a photo of a killer drawing, we want to create a series of inspiring posters. Four to be exact. Three of these poster designs will be selected by a Papergirl Arts Jury. You still have time to send us your design until the 25th.

The fourth limited edition poster we created specially for the project based on inspiration form last year. This cog illustration by Kristopher Kelly was a silkscreen design that we used in 2012 to bling up our bikes for the ride out. We loved the print so much that we used it to make a Papergirl Limited Edition Poster Set. Thanks KRIS!

These killer prints were printed by Sunshine Frere & Belinda Siu. There are 75 of these babies, and they will be gifted in full to folks who are keen to donate to Papergirl. (Be it their time as a volunteer, or donations through our INVESTYYC crowdfund campaign).
